On April 23, 2003, twenty-nine-year-old Laketa Cole became the first African-American woman appointed to serve on Cincinnati City Council. In November of that same year, Cincinnati voters showed their strong approval of Ms. Cole's first six months in office, propelling her to a third place finish in a field of twenty-six candidates. As a member of City Council, Ms. Cole emphasizes the necessity of unity building, and the need for government, businesses and residents to work together to achieve the common goal of a safe and livable city. She has received recognition and awards from numerous organizations including the Urban League of Greater Cincinnati, the Center for Closing the Health Gap, the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati, Applause Magazine, and the Three Square Music Foundation. In addition to serving on Council, Ms. Cole is currently employed as an adjunct professor at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. Through her teaching, Ms. Cole hopes to inspire future leaders to use their talents for the greater good, and to be the conductor of their own train. |
