The questions were prepared by the LWV Cincinnati Area and asked of all candidates for this office.
Read the answers from all candidates (who have responded).
1. What are your Qualifications for Office? (50 word limit)
Having served as Clerk of Council for the last 4 years, I have gained a very good perspective on what issues face the City. I have a good working relationship with existing members of Council and the City's Administration. Working for the Clerk of Courts has given me a good understanding of the Legal system and how laws are enforced.
2. What plans do you have to address your top three priorities? (100 word limit)
Currently the City of Cheviot only enforces building codes in a limited manner. I propose that Cheviot establish a citizen's committee to identify properties that are in violation. This committee would send notice to the property owner and notify the City if and when the problem has not been corrected. The City should establish a system of inspecting rental properties to verify they meet code and are safe for renters.A thriving business district keeps property values up and keeps crime down. I believe that the City needs to work with the CWCA to promote Cheviot and to help attract new businesses. Creating an attractive streetscape will also help.
3. What steps would you take to ensure that all public facilities are accessible to people with disabilities? (100 words limit)
The only City property that is not easily accessible is the Cheviot Fieldhouse. The lower level is not easily accessed from the upper level. Currently the City's finances would not allow for the addition of an elevator, but if grant money could be secured, I would like to see an overhaul of that facility which would include accessible restrooms and an elevator among other things. The restrooms at Harvest Home Lodge were upgraded a few years ago to be A.D.A. compliant. The rest of Harvest Home Park is accessible to all. Cheviot City Hall is also fully compliant.
4. What specific steps will you take to expand recycling services in your community? (100 words limit)
Many residents expressed their support for recycling when the service was suspended last year. The City does offer two recycling drop-off centers to residents and recent negotiations with Rumpke have kept the cost to the City low. Unfortunately, City's finances probably will not allow for the addition of curbside recycling, although if things were to change I would support adding that service. I think the best solution considering the City's financial situation would be to educate residents that the drop-off recycling centers are available and why a resident should recycle.
5. What steps would you take to provide affordable housing for all residents of your community? (100 words limit)
Affordable housing is not really an issue in Cheviot, as property in the community is relatively reasonable and there is very little land left to develop. The main issue with housing is maintaining the area's value by continuing to provide services and building a strong business district. Keeping property owner-occupied is the largest task ahead of the City. This needs to be accomplished without alienating our current residents, while also encouraging others to move into our area. Cheviot is a great community and through continued hard work by the City government, the residents, and the businesses it can only get better.
