At the conclusion of each of the ten commencement addresses he delivered as Principal of Liberty High School, Gene Clare imparted the same heartfelt sentiment to his students: "Tonight, I bid you farewell as students of Liberty High School. Tomorrow, I greet you as citizens in our community + and you can call me Gene." The sense of respect and genuine goodwill conveyed in this message is characteristic of Gene Clare. In the more than sixteen years Gene and his wife Gretchen have been a part of our community, he has distinguished himself as a top community leader and tireless volunteer. Under his leadership as Principal of Brentwood's beloved Liberty High School, Liberty was awarded the prestigious honor of "California Distinguished High School" by the state of California. Liberty was also honored with a $1.1 million Bay Area School Reform Grant sponsored by the Annenberg Foundation, which was used to shepherd in the School to Career reform movement at Liberty. Following his ten-year tenure at Liberty, Gene became the Director of Community Education for the Liberty Union High School District. In this capacity, he is responsible for the administration of Liberty's extensive Community Education Program, which includes Liberty Adult Education, La Paloma Continuation High School, Independence High School, summer school and after-school tutorial programs. Gene has truly dedicated himself to serving and improving the lives of others. The long-time educator was named Administrator of the Year in 2006. In 2005, his community leadership and dedication to volunteerism were recognized when he was voted runner-up Brentwood Citizen of the Year. Gene's memberships and affiliations include: California Human Development Corporation (CHDC) Chicano Leadership Academies Reaching Out (CLARO) Brentwood Rotary -- Past President and current member Brentwood Police Activities League (PAL) Brentwood Performing Arts Commission Brentwood Chamber of Commerce Co-Founder, Brentwood Youth Commission Brentwood Runners Everyone Welcome East Contra Costa Historical Society Gene has been enthusiastically endorsed by a number of Brentwood's most respected community leaders. Recognized for his expertise as a consensus-builder as well as his ability to inspire diverse groups to unite and work toward a common goal, Gene is the ideal choice to be Brentwood's next City Council member. |
