Smart Voter Official Statement for Shirley A. Thornton

Candidate for
Board Member, 4 Year; Sausalito Marin City School District

This is a copy of information submitted to elections officials by the candidate

Occupation:
Adjunct College Professor-CSUS, USAR Retired, Colonel 0-6

Education and Qualifications:
Let's keep the momentum going! Over the past five years our enrollment has continued to increase, the scores of our schools have doubled, and one of our schools, Bayside Elementary, received a commendation from the California Department of Education for being the second most improved elementary school in the entire state, in 2003-2004.

This year we have begun our fifteen-million-dollar bond modernization, that will result in the building of a new middle school, the replacement of our substandard K-2 portables with a new permanent building, and modernization of all other buildings to safety and ADA standards as required by state law. This project will result in an educational environment that is more conducive to learning. We have also hired a new superintendent and a new principal to continue the momentum of Vision 900, which is our program to make our district equal or better than other high achieving districts in Marin County and all of California.

As a K-12 educator with over 30 years of experience, and a CSUS professor in the School of Education, Leadership and Policies Studies Department, I believe that, with your support, I can continue to help our schools move in this positive direction.
