How Can FUHS District Best Serve Our Children?By Daniel C. "Dan" DayCandidate for Board Member; Fullerton Joint Union High School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
We have a very diverse group of students attending Fullerton High Schools. There are many unique student needs. Is Our District Doing This?I believe very firmly that our High School District is very well run by a very competent Superintendent as well as many highly qualified School Principals and othe administration personnel. With that being said I do believe that we need to reach out to ALL of the students in our high schools. We are fortunate to have a wonderful magnet school in our District. Troy is truly a magnificant school. Unfortunately, not all students are academically or culturally ready for this type of school. We need to meet the REAL NEEDS of the majority of our students. I see these needs as follows: A focus on the basic life skills such as language skills, math skills, improved reaading skills, and basic life skills needed in today's world of work. The majority of the graduates of Fullerton high schools never finish college. They need to learn meaningful skills while in high school. These skills are not only the basics of reading, language, and math, butreal skills that will help them in the World of Work. Practical skills that they can to an employer with. A knowledge of what is expected in today's work place. Ability to get a JOB! Standardized test scores are important, but so are everyday skill learning that will be with our graduates for life should they be one of our graduates don't attend or complete high school. Comprehensive High Schools are important to me, and I believe, to the welfare of the community as well as society in general. VOCATIONAL AND SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS need equal attention to the program for the gifted. Maybe more so!! I will work for the continuation of our programs that serve our best and gifted students, but I will also represent the students and families of many of our students whose educational needs are currently underserved. |
