Janice Keating was elected to the Modesto City Council in March of 2002. She has served on and chaired various committees including finance, audit, economic development and public safety. Janice served as vice-Mayor in 2004 and was re-elected to her seat in November of 2005.

During her time on the council, Janice has focused on issues of finance and the efficient provision of local services. In a recent endorsement, the Modesto Bee described Janice as a "tenacious public-interest watchdog; outraged resident; peacemaker; and good Samaritan. She has proved flexible enough to get things moving and firm enough to insist they be done right."

In January of 2003, Janice located, organized, and opened an emergency homeless shelter in Modesto in an astonishing seven-week period, mobilizing community support and an army of volunteers. The 120-bed shelter is currently operated by the Salvation Army and provides a warm and safe shelter to men, women, and children who need assistance.

On March of 2004 Janice Keating was named `Woman of the Year' for the 25th Assembly District in California. Assemblyman Dave Cogdill praised Janice's civic involvement, stating that her work "represents the heart and soul of the district. Her philanthropy teaches us all to be a little more compassionate, generous, and humane".

Janice has received additional honors from groups including the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She speaks frequently to church groups, civic and business organizations.

A homemaker and businesswoman, Janice operates a bookkeeping and tax preparation service out of her home. She also serves on the California Tax Education Council, is a Neighborhood Watch block coordinator, and volunteers for the AARP tax program at the Modesto Senior Citizens Center. Janice has coached and refereed soccer at the youth level and played as an adult.

Janice graduated with honors from Central Catholic High School where she was active in several sports. She attended the University of California at Santa Cruz as a U.C. Berkeley re-direct where she majored in Chemistry.

Councilmember Keating has been married to her husband Tim for 18 years and they have two children, seventeen year-old Colin and twelve year-old Meghan.
