I would like to address curriculum development, social-emotional learning, and efforts to diversify our funding base in order to decrease our reliance on property tax revenues to support the budget. On the academic front, I would like to see the strengthening of curriculum development across our three schools in the Hastings school district. At the elementary school level, I would support curriculum enhancements for the teaching of writing, in addition to those which have been recently made for the teaching of math. While I think that every school district must continuously examine and develop its academic offerings, I also believe that we should continue to find ways to nurture a healthy social-emotional learning environment for our children. In order to achieve our district's mission of helping children to "cultivate the attitudes and values necessary to function in a rapidly changing and diverse society," we need to teach our children to accept and embrace difference and to counter forms of intolerance such as bullying. I would also like to support the district's efforts to diversify its funding base so that it is not so reliant on property tax revenues to support the budget. I have extensive professional experience with grant writing to secure funds from private foundations and government agencies. |
