Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Ken Bukowski

Candidate for
Council Member; City of Emeryville

This information is provided by the candidate

Public Safety and City Infrastructure:

I am proud to say that as other cities are facing service cutbacks, we have maintained first-class police and fire departments and other vital city services you depend on, while balancing our city budget. Our police department's average response time is the best in the state, and our officers do an outstanding job of reaching out to all Emeryville citizens to keep our community safe.

Working with the council and city staff, we've upgraded and improved our city's public safety and infrastructure by:

  • Building a new fire station
  • Repaving our streets
  • Replacing and/or upgrading our city sewer system
  • Under-grounding the utilities along San Pablo Avenue, 40th Street, Shellmound Street and other parts of the city, dramatically improving Emeryville's streetscape
  • Upgrading and improving the city's traffic signals

Transit:

As someone who often uses a bicycle for transportation around our city, I will continue to advocate for bicycle and pedestrian-friendly policies, and increased access and connectivity for mass transit. We've improved our transit system and encouraged alternative modes of transportation by:

  • Bringing the Amtrak Station to Emeryville
  • Creating the Emery-Go-Round
  • Creating the Shellmound to 40th Street connection, including the 40th Street Bridge
  • Building a pedestrian bridge at the Amtrak Station
  • Creating pedestrian and bicycle paths throughout the city

Parks and Neighborhoods:

We've worked hard to make Emeryville a unique, vibrant, and supportive city to live in and visit by:

  • Creating new parks for all residents to enjoy, including Temescal Creek Park, Christie Avenue Park, and Stanford and Davenport Parks
  • Establishing a Child Development Center that provides families with the support and resources they need and where a number of qualified single parents obtain free childcare
  • Rehabilitating our Senior Center to ensure our senior residents are getting the services they deserve
  • Creating a first-time home buyers program that gives renters a real opportunity to become homeowners
  • Creating new shopping opportunities so residents can shop in their own community

Environment:

Our city has become a nationally-recognized leader in cleaning up toxic waste, and we continue to take bold steps in environmental leadership. Last year we installed solar panels on the City Hall rooftop, which will help to combat global warming by eliminating 1,250 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

With your support, over the next four years I will continue to put the interests and needs of Emeryville's residents first by:

  • Ensuring adequate staffing levels to maintain our excellent police and fire services
  • Enacting stronger notification policies regarding new development to ensure maximum participation of neighborhoods in projects with potential impacts
  • Continuing our successful partnership with Emeryville Unified School District as our test scores continue to rise
  • Increasing transit options by supporting expansion of transit services, bicycling and pedestrian improvements
  • Improving and expanding local parks and recreation services

Above all, our city government must work to include its citizens in creating a vision for our city.
