Council Member; City of Mill Valley

I will bring experience, leadership and a track record of accomplishments to the City Council. For example:

1) I was President/VP of several neighborhood organizations in the 1980s (leadership), aggressively opposed the over-development of Horse Hill and Kite Hill (experience) and was successful in delaying all development until I could get elected to the City Council (accomplishment).

2) I served on the City Council for four years (experience), led it as Mayor in 1990 (leadership) and maintained Mill Valley's small town character by reducing residential development on our prominent hillsides by 92% (accomplishment).

3) As a Councilmember, I helped revive the North Bay Division of the League of California Cities (accomplishment)and served as its first President (leadership) representing the interests of North Bay cities to the State government (experience).

4) When serving as the City's representative to the Sewerage Agency of Southern Marin (experience), I was elected President of the Board (leadership) and established an emergency repair fund now containing $3.4 million (accomplishment).

5) I now represent our business community's interests to the City as Chair of the Government Affairs Committee for the Chamber of Commerce (experience), am now the Chairman-elect of the Board of Directors (leadership) and developed a new City ordinance supporting merchandise sales and dining on our sidewalks (accomplishment).

6) I have helped educational nonprofit Artisans survive as a business (experience), am President of the Board of Directors (leadership), and established an annual event and monthly art walk program (Second Fridays a la cARTe) to ensure Artisans' long-term financial future (accomplishment).

My Priorities on the Council will include:

  • Closely controlling development levels to preserve Mill Valley's small town character
  • Sustaining a vibrant, local-serving business community
  • Restoring open, two-way communications with the community
  • Creating realistic and sustainable affordable housing strategies
  • Developing comprehensive transportation solutions including a shuttle bus pilot and improved pedestrian and cycle routes
  • Encouraging greener practices in our City and businesses
  • Improving flood warning techniques
