Environmental protections for CupertinoBy Raj Vasant AbhyankerCandidate for Council Member; City of Cupertino | |

Cities like Cupertino can better build sustainable communities by following green building principles.I learned more about the Global Green initiative today from a neighborhood leader. She discussed ways that cities like Cupertino can better build sustainable communities by following green building principles. Particularly, simple things such as the type of lights used at public places (we should use florescent rather than incandescent), and the materials used on top of roofs to keep interior spaces cooler. I learned a lot from our discussion, and downloaded a report prepared for the City of Cupertino having recommendations for building a more environmentally balanced community. I am completely for economically justifiable sustainable building strategies that will ensure a better environment for future generations. In addition, another neighbor told me that residents in Cupertino can recycle AA and AAA batteries by placing them on top of the blue recycle bins. I don't think many residents know this. Furthermore, I think we should make an effort to inform populations in Cupertino about the rationale and laws regarding the recycling of batteries. In many countries, people simply put such batteries in the trash can, and we should help families gain awareness of the environmental benefits and legal requirements for recycling old batteries. |
