Alice Spearman is a mother of two adult women; she is also the grandmother of two young girls attending middle school in Oakland Unified School District. She was born in Berkeley, California and soon moved with her parents to Oakland, California where she has spent most of her life. Alice spent her school life here in Oakland attending Lockwood Elementary School, Woodland Elementary School, Frick Middle School, and graduating from Castlemont High School, then attending San Jose State University. Ms. Spearman is a member of First African Methodist Episcopal Church, Dr. Harold Mayberry, pastor. Ms. Spearman is a Child and Adult Advocate. She serves as an advocate for the best education to be given to all children in Oakland. She has volunteered at many schools, starting with Thurgood Marshall Elementary School, Castlemont Senior High School and Frick Middle School. She is the Parent Liaison for Project SOAR serving Oakland Technical High School and McClymonds High School Complex. Currently Alice is the School Board Director Serving District 7, where she is the current Vice Chair of the Board, and Chair of the Audit Committee. As a board member, she is in the forefront of keeping the district focused on the Academic Achievement of all the students, reducing the achievement gap between the students of color, ensuring parent participation in all aspects of their child's education, ensuring fiscal responsibility of the district even while under state control, supporting and monitoring the results of all the new educational initiatives which are there to increase student achievement, and initiating and ensuring that the Oakland Unified School District spends it's bond funds supporting local business. She is also past chair of the District Advisory Council, Oakland Unified School District, served as Chair and Vice Chair of the National Coalition of Title I Chapter I Parents, Region 9, a board member of the Family Action Network, California State Department of Education and served Vice Chair of the Community Action Agency, City of Oakland, appointed by Councilmember Henry Chang, representing the entire city for 9 years. She is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. |
