Let's Have Common Sense in City Hall ... For A Change!By Frank HotchkissCandidate for Member, Republican Party County Central Committee; County of Santa Barbara; Supervisorial District 1 | |

One Community Working Together For The Good of AllCommon sense is sorely lacking among present City Council members. The "Light Blue Line" demarcating a theoretical rise in the sea level was just one example. Lack of aggressive measures to stop gang activity is another. And rather than plan for the use of cars, the City Council wants to force people from their cars through traffic impediments and other means. None of this makes sense. Creative planning and common sense are needed. Our current Council has neither, and should be replaced. Another challenge ahead is the density of future housing. While we should sometimes allow increased density for meritorious projects, in general we should stick to existing density requirements--and height limitations. Environmental decisions should be based on sound science. Echoing the sentiments of our governor, the City should encourage immigrants to learn English so they can participate and contribute fully in and to Santa Barbara's economic, civic and cultural life. This could include closer cooperation between the City and local schools. Government best serves its citizens when it is as unobtrusive and efficient as possible. I pledge open, honest government in Santa Barbara when elected. |
