State Senator; District 25; Democratic Party

Kevin Biggers was born in 1962 and raised in Los Angeles, in the heart of the 25th Senate District. His mother raised Kevin along with his six brothers and one sister by herself. Growing up in a single parent household, Kevin's mother forged in him a strong work ethic and kept him pointed in the right direction. As a child, Kevin was involved in numerous parks and recreation programs. These programs formed a vital part of the community and as part of his vision for the 25th Senate District, Kevin would like to see these programs expand.

As a child, Kevin was industrious and strove to make a contribution to his family. He worked as the neighborhood shoeshine boy, bottle hustler, aluminum can king (learning the benefits of recycling as a very young age) and by high school, Kevin was working as an office assistant at the Space and Missiles Systems Organization (SASMO) in El Segundo. Also in high school Kevin was an Explorer with the Inglewood Police Department. Kevin worked for the Inglewood Police Department from his sophomore year to his senior year in high school, where he learned leadership skills he still uses to this day. He answered phones, participated in "ride alongs", and worked in the jail in Inglewood. Kevin also excelled in sports at Serra High School in Gardena (located in the 25th Senate District) and became the captain of the football team and lettered in basketball.

After high school, Kevin attended Mt. San Antonio Community College in Walnut, California. While at Mt. Sac., Kevin continued to excel in football, becoming the captain of the team and earning a full tuition scholarship to the University of Nebraska. While at Nebraska, Kevin participated in three major bowl games and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech Communications.

After graduating from the University of Nebraska, Kevin signed professional football contracts with four different professional football teams in the CFL and NFL. After his football career, Kevin became a real estate professional starting out as a real estate agent. He became a real estate broker and started his own brokerage firm, Biggers & Associates.

It was during this time that Kevin became very active in his community, which continues to this day. He logged over 2000 hours on a crisis hotline (often covering the night shift), helping people in their hour of greatest need connect to vital community services, in some cases saving lives. He served on the Resource Conservation District in the high desert where he learned first hand about Southern California's water and air quality issues, as well as the benefits of robust conservation/recycling efforts. Kevin also served as President of the American Cancer Society in the high desert where he actively raised funds and awareness for the Society's programs. He also served the Democratic Party as President of the Young Democrats of San Bernardino County, President of the Palos Verdes Democratic Club and as a Regional Director for the California Democratic Party.

Deciding it was time to serve his community in the political arena, in 1994, Kevin ran for the United States Congress in the 40th Congressional District. Two years later Kevin was elected to the Hesperia City Council. While serving on the city council, he also served on the Air Quality Management District, the Hesperia Wastewater Authority, the Transit Authority, as well as the City's water and fire districts. Through these efforts, Kevin became skilled at tackling the tough issues important to his community. This experience, combined with his years of community service and activism make him the qualified leader for the 25th Senate District.

In 1997, Kevin joined the Californians for Gray Davis campaign and played a pivotal role in electing Gray Davis as the first democratic governor in the state in 16 years. After Gray Davis became Governor, he appointed Kevin as the Director of the Inland Empire Office of the Governor. In that position, Kevin worked with state and local officials, covering an area that exceeds 40,000 square miles. Kevin was the face of the Governor's office during the devastating wildfires in 2003. He worked nonstop with local rescue officials, including the American Red Cross, the California Department of Forestry and numerous fire department officials until the evacuation centers were operational and all of those affected by the fires had a safe haven. He was also appointed by Governor Davis to the California Dental Board where he served until 2007.

From 2004 to 2006, Kevin led the African American Voter Registration, Education and Participation Project as its Director where he registered 27,000 new voters in Los Angeles County -- a monumental feat.

While serving as the Director of the AAVREP Project, Kevin and his wife Katherine realized that time was flying by and their children were getting older while Kevin worked 14 to 16 hour days registering and educating voters. Kevin decided to become a stay-at-home father in 2007 and take care of his children full time. Kevin's daughter Zoe is 11 and loves playing softball, soccer and the piano and his son John is 10 and loves airplanes, playing golf, running track and playing the guitar.

After living eight years in Palos Verdes with his family, Kevin is ready to serve in public office again. He is the right leader at the right time to take the 25th Senate District in a new direction. Vote Kevin Biggers for State Senate on June 3rd!
