Alice Geary Sgroi grew up in Tulsa and came to St. Louis after receiving her Master's Degree in Counseling. She began a career as a Rehabilitation Counselor, where she worked to assist people with disabilities in becoming employed. In that position she considered medical limitations, employment assets, and job market conditions in order to help consumers develop employment plans. Alice's employment with the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation as a merit system appointee meant that the employment was based on educational degree, not on political considerations. Although the rules of the Division prevented active participation in partisan politics, Alice maintained an interest in civic and world affairs developed in high school. During that time she followed political news and researched candidates, and voted in virtually every election. She also participated in nonpartisan issue campaigns including several environmental campaigns and worked at the polls. As a Rehabilitation Counselor Alice sought Continuing Education in order to keep up with new developments in the field, feeling very strongly that public service is a public trust. She obtained and maintained a voluntary credential as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor which required 100-150 hours of CE every five years. She was active in professional associations, serving as president of both the Missouri Rehabilitation Counseling Association and later the Great Plains Region RCA, at which time she was on the board of the National RCA. She was promoted and served as District Supervisor of an office with 15 Master's level counselors. Later she developed a private practice in counseling, but eventually retired in order to care for her husband, who had a broken hip that was not treated correctly.
