Candidate for
Council Member; City of Arcata

Shane was born and raised in Arcata, and was introduced to a culture of social awareness and public service at a very young age. As a young boy, his mother Susan regularly took him along to her classes at HSU and to her board meetings at the Northcoast Environmental Center. Shane grew up to appreciate volunteerism and became forever committed to working for a better, more just world.

As he grew up, Shane became a grass-roots community organizer. The Placebo, Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt County, The Tenants Union of Northern Humboldt, The Humboldt County Democratic Central Committee, Food Not Bombs, and the Redwood Peace & Justice Center, are among the organizations and causes he has volunteered for.

Three years ago, at the age of 18, Shane was elected as a Governing Board Member for the Northern Humboldt Union High School District, making him the youngest elected official in Humboldt County. Voters in Arcata and surrounding areas chose him over many older opponents because they wanted a new voice on the board. As a board member, Shane has not disappointed: he has devoted himself to representing the interests of parents, teachers, and students.

When he is not busy with one of the many worthy causes he his involved with, Shane works part-time, attends classes at College of the Redwoods, dabbles in freelance writing, plays guitar with friends, and goes to Crabs baseball games with his girlfriend Monica.
