HAFERMAN ENTERS MONTEREY COUNCIL RACE

Councilmember promises more government accountability

MONTEREY-- Jeff Haferman, Monterey City Councilmember and a researcher at the Naval Postgraduate School, is announcing his candidacy for re-election to the Monterey City Council in November's election. Haferman, 44, was the top vote-getter in the 2004 Council election and has remained active as an advocate for neighborhoods.

"I'm proud to represent the citizens of Monterey on our City Council. While some are focusing on what divides our council, the truth is that this council has accomplished a lot together. We recently passed the first Green Building Ordinance in the County. We have a balanced budget. Our library is open every day, and our fire and police departments are as strong as ever" said Haferman.

Looking to the future, Haferman said he will continue to listen to his constituents' ideas on how to make Monterey even better. "We need to revitalize our downtown, especially in the aftermath of the fire on Alvarado Street" he said, "but we must make sure that as we move forward we continue to preserve our cherished historic character."

Haferman said a cornerstone of his campaign will be to make government more open, honest, and accountable. "Over the years I've continued to seek input from citizens in every neighborhood. They need to know that I am listening to them, that I will take their messages to City Hall, and that they will be heard."
