Developing Local Sources of Water: As imported supplies of water become less and less certain, the District must develop local sources of water. Our Groundwater Recovery Facility today provides 10% of the total supply. A second well would increase supply to 20%. In partnership with neighboring cities and water districts South Coast is developing an Ocean Desalination Facility. It could provide as much as 50% of the District's water supply. A Pilot Project to test feasibility and to resolve technical issues is to begin in March. Protecting Ocean Water Quality: The District diverts urban runoff from storm drains into the sewer system before flows can contaminate the ocean. To prevent sewage spills, all sewage pipes have been videotaped. They are inspected and cleaned at least once a year. For the last two years the District did not experience a sewage spill. Encouraging Conservation: The District has a tiered water rate structure which rewards frugal water use by allowing water to be purchased at a lower unit price. The heavy water user must purchase some of his water at a higher unit price. Rebates are available for low flow toilets and circular sprinkler heads. We must all do our share by taking shorter showers, using dishwasher and washing machines only with full loads. Our landscaping needs to feature drought tolerant plants and we should avoid hosing off our driveway and patio area. |
