Born Karen Tracy Moreland, in Garden Grove, CA; as the youngest of the 5 children of Joseph & Margaret Moreland. I was born 5 days before my parents 7th Anniversary and raised in Garden Grove on Pinto Road. Dad was a volunteer coach and referee for many of our teams before running for GG City Council in 1972 & 1978. Mom always tried to help wherever possible before running for GG Mayor in 1980. My brothers, Allen & Bruce; my sister, Carol; and brother, Dale & I went to Lincoln Elementary (when Lincoln closed - Dale & I went to Woodbury Elementary), Peters Intermediate, and Santiago High School. I've taken classes @ University of Maryland, Far East Div.(in Japan); Santa Ana College (CA); and Clark Co. Community College(in North Las Vegas, NV), so I've some college education. I've served honorably on the Garden Grove Youth Commission (1975 - 1977),in the United States Army (Enlisted in 1977 -Discharged in 1980), as a Red Cross Volunteer (off & on since 1977 - as an instructor for 1st & CPR until my pregnancy in 1993 - and in disaster services), and as a City of Garden Grove Volunteer coaching basketball since 2001. In the 2001/2002 school year, Principal Bonnie Strand and I led a group of volunteers to establish a PTO at Peters Elementary School that continues on even with the division of Peters into 2 elementary schools. I ran for Mayor of Garden Grove in 1986 & 1987. I've been married since 04/04/1992 and have 2 sons. My sons were born on 12/09/93 and 06/09/2000. My older son, Stephen, has served as my assistant coach to his younger brother's basketball teams for 2 seasons as well, continuing a "Moreland" family tradition of community service. In this 2008 run for Mayor, I'm simply asking you to let me serve you. Thank you. |
