California Healthy Kids Survey Results - Food for thought

The Nuview Union School District administered the Elementary School California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) in Fall 2005 to fifth-grade students to measure student behaviors and the factors that influence them. CHKS is sponsored by the California Department of Education (CDE).

In order to assess and reduce student violence, substance use, and other health-risk behaviors that undermine the well-being of our youth and school success.

The survey results revealed the following BAD NEWS:

  • 33 percent of our fifth graders have consumed alcohol.
  • 58 percent of our fifth graders have reported being targeted by bullies.
  • 38 percent of our fifth graders have reported seeing other students in the possession of a knife or gun at school.
  • 40 percent of our fifth grade students have indicated that they do not feel safe at school all of the time.
  • 23 percent of students report high levels opportunities for meaningful participation at their school.
