Budget Crisis/Economy

By Sherry Casper

Candidate for Council Member; City of El Cajon

Why I support the half-cent sales tax measure on the ballot.
El Cajon is struggling as much as, or more than, other cities caught between the State's Budget Crisis and the general state of the local economy. El Cajon's half-cent sales tax was proposed to stabilize the General Fund monies so that major cuts of current city services would be prevented. Of all methods of taxation, the sales tax is the most fair to all socio-economic levels. Those who have more, spend more, and pay more tax. Each citizen who votes for or against this measure needs to keep in mind that how they vote will affect the lives of the estimated 97,000 residents of this city, not just their household. The proposed cuts include reductions in sworn and non-sworn personnel in both Police and Fire Departments, closing one fire station [and shutting down its trucks] a day on a rotating basis.

  • Food from the grocery store is not taxed.
  • For every gallon of gas purchased, it will cost two more cents.
  • For every box of disposable diapers, a family will pay about fifteen cents to have nice parks and emergency services available.

It's not enough to make a drive outside the city limits worthwhile. It is enough to perhaps save a person's life or a family's home from fire because we have full fire/rescue service. My constituents will have to make up their own minds. For me: it's a no-brainer. I am voting for it. I love my city and I don't want any jobs or services cut. I don't want city parks maintained by lowest-bidding MOW-BLOW-AND-GO landscapers. El Cajon needs more detectives, communications center operators, and file clerks in our Police Department.
