College AccreditationBy Greg A. McCrearyCandidate for Trustee; San Joaquin Delta Community College District; Trustee Area 6 | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Receiving full accreditation is a must. It insures the degress received at Delta will be accepted by employers and institutions of higher learning. The accreditation report did not find fault with the academic programs for the students. The current academic programs and partnerships with industry remain strong and successful. The percentage of graduating students transfering to four year colleges is in the top five community colleges in the nation. The primary focus of the accreditation report concerned inadequate board policies, board-administration relations, and micro-managing by board members. To correct these issues, an ethics policy has been written which includes penalties against board members who violate it. Two board members have chosen not to run for another term. This will bring in new board members with new ideas and help the board to regain its ability to focus on the college mission statement: comprehensive instructional programs, student services and public services that are of high quality. Micro-managing of the administration will discontinue due to the new ethics policy, and with the current 4 person board majority dissolved. |
