Includes video link to the planDear 12th Congressional District Citizen: This morning the House of Representatives begins debate on the Senate version of the Wall Street bailout plan. News outlets are reporting the last minute addition of multi-million dollar "sweetners" for House and Senate members to ensure passage. Once again, the disappointing way Washington does business--buy, sell, trade and giveaway. After the failure of the original $700B plan, Congressman Murtha told reporters constituents were calling "50 to 1" against the bailout measure, but voted "yes" anyway. He apparently knew better. So here's my recommendation to Mr. Murtha. Instead of piling on another layer of taxpayer-funded promises to win a re-vote, Mr. Murtha and congressional leaders should, 'stop, look and listen.' If the plan is as solid as he predicts, take a week, hold town hall meetings in the 12th District and allow taxpayers to have our say. We can handle your version of the truth, and we'll respectfully give you our view. Let's convene a conversation with the people who run mom and pop grocery stores, gas stations, barbershops and restaurants. Talk to people who don't play much on Wall Street, but know how to pay their bills on time and deliver honest value to customers. I can promise Mr. Murtha he'll discover something remarkable about these people. Yes, they really do know something about the economy! Watch my Main Street Rescue Plan Video Here > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AORa86XT58s If Congressman Murtha thinks that the only way the people's business can be conducted is through old-fashioned backroom congressional poker, he's wrong. We can solve our problems the right way--with transparency and real accountability to American taxpayers. Righting America's economic course can only happen when you and I, the stakeholders, have a seat at the table. Let's get to work! Bill Russell Candidate for Congress |
