A partial list of important issues that I have participated in and supported in the past few years and while in elected office.
Accomplishments - While I certainly cannot take the only credit for these accomplishments during my term on the City Council or while on the Planning Commission or as a neighborhood association supporter, I do take pride in them and enabling them to become our City practices:
- Supported broader and better notifications on development in the City of San Mateo
- Council initiator of the Sustainable Initiatives Plan, chair of the Sustainability Advisory Committee and continuing to work to implement its recommendations and decrease our carbon dioxide impacts as a community
- Approved the new and sustainably green Main Police Station
- As a Planning Commissioner, pushed for a green and new Main Library. The new main library was awarded a LEED Gold rating in the 2008.
- Approved the addition of Solar Panels with a public education component for the new Main Library. When the solar panels are installed they will save our city significant operating costs for electricity.
- Founding member of San Mateo Flood Assessment Correction Team (FACT). Together we passed a measure to fix our South Levee system and prevent tidal flooding in a large portion of San Mateo.
- I voted to approve Bay Meadows Phase II and when it is constructed it will bring good jobs to San Mateo, provide a vibrant new neighborhood and significantly add 15+ acres to our system of parks.
- Voted for the reconstruction of Harborview Park in the North Shoreview area
- Approved efforts over the past 4 years that have reduced our "failed streets" from 24 miles down to 14 miles. We still have work to do but this is stepping in the right direction.
- I continue to push for zoning corrections in the North Central and Central neighborhoods so that the land zoning more closely matches what is currently built there. Development should be more concentrated near our train stations.
- I voted to approve 2 new stop signs on Hillsdale Boulevard to improve safety and slow traffic.
- I continue to push for more fuel efficient hybrid vehicles for general city use and for public safety uses. We now have a sizable number of these vehicles which cost us less for fuel and emit less carbon dioxide.
- I voted to support our Downtown marketing efforts that are helping to support our businesses in these challenging economic times.
- Voted to approve the increase in affordable housing percentage from 10% to 15% in new developments.
- Supporter of Measures H and P which put reasonable limits on height and density of buildings in San Mateo and established the inclusionary housing provisions of the City.
- Approved the new sign ordinance which will minimize visual clutter while allowing our Realtors to do their jobs.
- Voted for and supported improvements to 3rd Avenue between highway 101 and Norfolk Street.
