We need to find ways to make government lean.We need to find ways to make government lean. I believe there are several ways to do this and still maintain services by trimming waste from the top, not just from the bottom. We need to roll back pay adjustments for the upper echelons of city government. We have this misconception that we must pay more to get and keep good people even if we can't afford the high salaries. We have all heard about the number of people who have a wealth of experience but can't find a job. We need to look from within our own citizenship for hiring purposes and not be so quick to hire those from outside the city. We are in the perfect position to move toward an exciting new way to hire highly trained, qualified and motivated people.... they come to us from within. Finding a way to slow the drain on the city coffers by changing the retirement system is another solution. Excess employees in particular agencies should be trimmed or made part time. We have to start thinking that public service is not another welfare program as some people would like to believe. We must be willing, in times like these, to cut deeply and fairly and they must be across the board. As a final note: you can ask your City Council members to do a lot of things and they say they will but you have to help. Nothing happens without everyone's participation. Get out and vote! |
