Candidate for
Supervisor; County of Alameda; Supervisorial District 2

As your County Supervisor, my priorities will be:

Economy

Elected leaders at all levels of government have a responsibility to work to fix our economy. As your Supervisor, I will fight to ensure that our vital public services are adequately funded, that failing programs will either be retooled or replaced, and that county employees and workers on county projects always receive fair wages and benefits.

Healthcare

I will fight to expand and improve healthcare services in my district and throughout Alameda County for those who can afford it and those who cannot. We must also protect and support our local health clinics and ensure that St. Rose Hospital has the resources it needs to serve the community.

Public Safety

Economic times are tough, but public safety should be the last thing on the chopping block. In 2009, I helped lead the successful Hayward Measure A Campaign, which saved $13 million in vital services, including police and fire. On the Board of Supervisors, I will continue my strong support for public safety, by helping develop and fund programs which support our police, fire, and paramedic services, and increased emergency preparedness. I am honored that former Alameda County Sheriff Charles Plummer has endorsed my campaign.

Education

Budget cuts at the state and local level are leaving our schools with fewer and fewer options. I will work closely with the five school districts in District 2, to maximize and prioritize our resources, retain and reward quality teachers, and give struggling students the support they need to stay in and finish school.

Environment

There is a lot we can do at the local level to protect our environment. As your County Supervisor, I will promote smart growth and development strategies, and policies to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions on our roads and highways, in our homes and communities, and government buildings.

Transportation

With our population expanding, and traffic, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions increasing, it's time to get serious about improving our transportation services. And we can do so while also creating jobs and protecting our environment. In District 2 that means working to complete the 238 Corridor Project, and the Oakland Airport Connector, and breaking ground on BART to San Jose.

Open, Transparent County Government

Many citizens are unaware of what County government does, or how they can get involved, and use local government to empower themselves and their communities. One easy step we can take is to begin airing all Board of Supervisors meetings on public access television. In the 21st Century, it's a shame we don't already do so.
