How can an elected official who has accepted campaign money from public employee unions, negotiate with the same unions that just helped them get elected? And by negotiating, I do not mean: "Where do I sign?" The answer is: They don't.

Richard Faher is the only candidate for the 4th District Orange County Board of Supervisors who has never solicited or accepted any money from public employee unions. All of the other candidates have accepted money from public employee unions and have granted large salary increases and/or large pension benefits. These large public employee union increases have driven Orange County into a financial crisis.

In 2002, the Fullerton City Council passed a large pension increase called "3 percent at 50" for public safety workers. Later, the other non safety public employees union also received large immediate pay increases. The annual financial report for the city of Fullerton for the fiscal year ended June 30th 2009 shows an unfunded actuarial accrued liability of $76.1 million. This number represents the amount of money the City of Fullerton does not have to meet its future pension obligations. The annual financial report for the City of Anaheim for the fiscal year ended June 30th 2009 shows an unfunded actuarial accrued liability of $301 million.

At the county level, there is a $3.1 billion unfunded actuarial accrued liability. That's "B" for billion. On February 9th, 2010, the Orange County Supervisors approved a new three year contract agreement with the Sheriff's union. Once again this new deal does nothing to reduce the $3.1 billion dollar unfunded actuarial accrued liability. Supervisor John Moorlach cast the lone vote against the deal. Richard Faher would have also voted against that deal.
