KEEPING INSTRUCTIONAL DAYS

By John de Beck

Candidate for Trustee; San Diego Unified School District; Trustee Area C

Tried to get non teaching days for furloughs, so that teaching days would not be reduced
The current budget crisis in California Schools has required cost saving measures that include teacher salaries. In our district, the contract called for more days than the state required and many of those paid days were non teaching days, and other days were divided into half days of instruction and the rest of the day for teacher planning.

I proposed that any furloughs be either on non teaching days or on the half days so that student instructional time not be reduced. Of course this did involve the teaching contract and was negotiable.

I was extremely disappointed when the teachers union decided, and the school board agreed, to take furlough days during the time that teachers meet with kids. This reduced the instructional time of students which is highly correlated with student achievement.

My priority still remains to increase student/teacher contact time. Kids gain more when they work with our highly qualified teachers.
