Teamwork (What your School Board Does)

By Albert Lau

Candidate for Board Member; Piner-Olivet Union School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Teamwork - A cooperative effort by a group of people towards a common goal.
There are many people that have a role in educating our children. First and foremost, Students are responsible for their actions and decisions. They need to understand that their education is in their hands and they have to work hard to get the most benefits from what school has to offer. Families provide the support needed to help students grow with integrity and develop sound ethics and morals. Teachers are the direct educational link to students. They provide the most lasting impact to our students simply because of the time and effort they spend with our children. The school staff helps to create a secure and safe environment for our children, ensuring the school operates efficiently. The Principal is the leader at a school, providing a vision and making sure that the staff is working together. The Superintendent and District Staff help craft and implement policies and budgets for the school district.

The Piner-Olivet Union School Board (the Board) is a community oversight committee that works with the Superintendent as a team in governing the school district. There are 5 members on the Board, which are locally elected officials. The main responsibilities of the Board are: Setting the direction for our schools; Establishing an effective and efficient structure for the District; Providing support; Ensuring accountability to the community; and Acting as community leaders.

As a Board member, I will strive to do my best to bring students, families, the community and the school district together to strengthen our schools. These are tough economic times, and we have all endured many hardships these past few years. Our school district has had to make difficult choices to deal with the lack of funding and diminishing enrollment. Now, we are in a unique position to develop a new outlook for our schools and our community. We have a new Superintendent, consolidated campuses, and principals and teachers in new positions. New alternative funding will have to be found and new innovative teaching methods to be implemented.

It will take teamwork to make our schools efficient and successful. I recognize that it will take all of us working together to give our children the best education possible. I am asking you to join me by stepping up and provide a helping hand to our schools, not in terms of money, but in terms of time and effort.

I would appreciate your vote on Tuesday, November 2, 2010. Thank You.
