1. How will you prioritize the budget choices the Legislature must make to align the state’s income and spending, and address the need for fair revenue sources that are sufficient for state and local government services?
Answer from Jenny Oropeza:
I will keep firm to our core values in negotiating a resolution to our budget. We must care for the most vulnerable in our society, ensure a quality education for all and provide a quality of life that all Californian's deserve.
2. What proposals, if any, do you support to fix the budget process? What other types of changes or reforms, if any, do you think are important to make our state government function more effectively?
Answer from Jenny Oropeza:
Repeal of the two-thirds requirement to pass the budget so a majority of Legislators can make decisions about the most important priorities for California. Transfer the decisions that affect local government and schools to local government and schools to give them more control over their own operations.
3. Many members of the Legislature say that education is a high priority for the state. Yet fees for public higher education have gone up dramatically and funding has been cut. What is your vision for California’s higher education future, and how do you propose to get there?
Answer from Jenny Oropeza:
I am a supporter of the California Master Plan for higher education, including the goal of providing a quality affordable public education to all. I have and will continue to be an advocate for keeping fees low.
4. What other major issues do you think the Legislature must address in 2011? What are your priorities?
Answer from Jenny Oropeza:
Funding, quality and access to all of education; healthcare; the environment and budget reform.
