Why such a stupid story..?$12 million was paid to Red Barn in anticipation of Phase 1 of the New Town Center Project, and the City of Hercules got almost nothing for this. This $12 million was spent in the most ridiculous ways: extravagant monthly fees to Red Barn and to their associates, such as $10,000 a month to their lawyer and reimbursement at $200 an hour for time reading text messages. Invoices were paid by the City without any apparent review by the City manager or City Council. When Council raised his voice against those practices? Never. Not even when the City/RDA in its infinite largess gave Red Barn the Market Hall land (about 6 acres) for FREE! A $6.5M gift in exchange for nothing! That's not all: as soon as Red Barn got the property title, they mortgaged it to get $2M out of it, and guess who paid for the lender fees in the transaction? The City of course, who else? Did you hear Council make any comments about this? No. Here we are today: No New Town Center has been built, the Town Center Project itself has been abandoned (who knows what will be done with this property). $12 million has been wasted on an adult size lemonade stand and a coffee booth. Market Hall is closing at the end of March 2011, after being open only a few months. All of that in the middle of what was supposed to be our showpiece Hercules Town Center... |
