Family, Sunday School/Church, Public & College Education all instilled the meaning of responsibility, that being the ability-to-respond. Our family was business oriented. I was with Mother, a Douglas Business School graduate in Monessen PA of the late 30's, as a little one while she managed a California State Teachers College local grocery store on Park Street in the late 50's; while Dad managed a Texaco full service gas station down at 3rd & Union Streets; & my brother had a refreshment cart at the Pittsburgh Steelers training camp in California PA. At 8 years old I asked Dad for something I wanted, he said "sure, just save your money, when you have enough, buy it." The very next day I was placed on a $.25/week allowance which I earned by working 4 hours per night & most of saturday at their newest business, a full service Sunoco gas station in Coal Center PA. These earliest lessons learned are priceless!!! Since most evaluate by dollars & cents, consider this: I attribute the recovery of $.5Million Federal funds within 1st 5 months & $1.25Million/month project management abilities in Washington DC directly to my lessons taught by my parents during my 0-13 year old period. Thanks Mom, Dad, Church, & Community! I'm sure the American taxpayer thanks you as it was a major utility as our customer, Potomac Electric Power Company, which needed a business education in right & wrong, among others. |
