- Served on Board of Directors for Environmental Studies Associates, a community support organization for the undergraduate Environmental Studies program at University of California, Santa Barbara; including continual service as Chair of the annual Scholarship Selection Committee.
- Eagle Scout Award from Boy Scouts of America, earned as a teenager, before they openly discriminated against gay people.
LOCAL GOVERNMENT POSITIONS with former public service
- Board of Trustees, Mosquito & Vector Management District of Santa Barbara County.
Appointed to this independent Special District by City of Santa Barbara (July 2006).
Served on General Manager Recruitment Committee of the Board, coordinated with the hired General Manager on meeting agendas and District policy direction, represented District at public outreach events, reviewed all aspects of agency governance and budget formulation.
- Transportation & Circulation Committee Member, City of Santa Barbara. Vice Chair (2008) and Chair (2009). Appointed December 2006 to this Committee that reviews project and plan consistency with the City General Plan and Circulation Element. Advises City Council and other City governing bodies on sustainable transportation planning issues and project design to benefit all modes of transportation.
- Creeks Restoration & Clean Water Improvement Committee Member, City of Santa Barbara. Appointed March 2001 to December 2006.
Served as Committee Chair and Vice Chair, also working on watershed planning and budget review sub-committees, and other ad-hoc projects about ecological restoration of urban creek corridors, water quality treatment infrastructure, and public education and outreach.
- Fish & Game Commission, County of Santa Barbara. Dec. 2003 to Dec. 2009.
Reviewed grant proposals about environmental education and habitat conservation projects. Advised County Board of Supervisors on marine and terrestrial habitat issues, including steelhead habitat issues for Santa Ynez River.
