There has to be a better way to fund our medical emergency servicesI was appointed to the CLSD Board to fill a vacancy prior to this general election. Several friends of various political persuasions asked me to volunteer, and I did so for both personal and community service reasons. The personal involved Alice breaking her hip two years ago. The emergency response was laudably fast and effective, and opened my eyes to an essential coastal service I had heretofore taken for granted. This inspired me to "team" with Kenny Jowers to support raising the parcel tax. I oppose increasing taxes that get lost in the general fund "never, never land," but endorse "pay-as-you-go" fees for essential community services. My concern is that every four years or so the parcel tax will have to be increased by a two-thirds vote unless a different way is found to accommodate inflation and an aging population with little or no increase in the tax base, i.e. the number of parcels isn't growing, and the number of houses is static. I'm confident that by working with the good people at CLSD and the Medical Center that we will arrive at an effective solution to this problem. I graduated from both Point Arena Elementary and High School. Undergraduate work began at Humboldt State and ended with a Bachelor of Science at University of Arizona, summa cum laude, with a double major in Accounting and Russian; MBA, Michigan State; CPA, Hawaii. I had many jobs in the Air Force including Controller and Accounting Manager. My favorite was five wonderful years in England as Budget Officer, responsible for funding the operations of two airfields with 72 fighter/bombers, 5,000 employees, housing for families, three schools, and a hospital. After Air Force retirement I worked at Lockheed and Kaiser Permanente as an Internal Auditor. Alice and I were elected to the Point Arena School Board for four years, and I have been president of Gualala Lions, Gualala Rotary, and Garcia Grange, plus served as treasurer, secretary, and in other positions for these wonderful community service groups. I welcome this opportunity for further service in this "best of all possible places." |
