Continuing to support and expand this vital link in the educational processDuring the 1970's and into the 1990's, what used to be known as "shop classes" were closed due to the lack of money, and to the lack of available teachers. Since I have been on the AUHSD Board, these "shop classes" which are now called Career Technical Education Pathways (CTE) have come alive, especially in our District. We have over 80 various classes that all lead to receiving a high school diploma, in conjunction with completing the District graduation requirements. Not all students plan to go to college, however, it is our philosophy to prepare them for that opportunity if they so desire. As a student progresses through high school, they are able to enroll in a number of CTE courses while at the same time advancing towards earning their high school diploma. These CTE career pathway opportunities help to prepare many students who do not desire to continue their education beyond high school. They also give students who are questioning the value of an education an opportunity to take an interest in a subject, and be an active participant in something they like doing, thereby keeping them interested in school versus dropping out. |
