Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Christopher Kent Chiang

Candidate for
Board Member; Mountain View-Whisman School District

This information is provided by the candidate

The Mountain View Whisman School District Board of Trustees oversees Mountain View's nine elementary and middle schools. There are five trustees, each elected to represent you for four year terms.

What does the school board do? The school board has three main functions: 1) hire and evaluate the superintendent 2) ensure taxpayer funds are effectively used 3) develop district-wide policies

The school board does not run classrooms; teachers do that. They do not run schools; principals do that. They do not run the district; the superintendent does that. The board is in charge of only one employee: the superintendent. It's equally important to remember that the authority resides in the board as body and not in a single trustee.

A successful board trustee needs both understanding of community values and education policy. A successful board needs trustees with diverse skill sets that share a commitment to work together to educate all children.

Why Chris? The board needs a trustee that can bring strong education policy and experience to district policy. Without education experience on the board, the board is under prepared to adequately review district staff recommendations on school policies.

I have been a teacher for the last eight years. I have taught urban students in New York City and private school students in the Silicon Valley. I have a masters in teaching from Stanford University and another masters in educational leadership from Columbia University. I currently teach 6th grade history, and I am both a Google Certified Teacher and a Microsoft Innovative Educator. My wife is an elementary school teacher, and we have one daughter. I ask for your vote in order to help bring the best education policies from around the world to Mountain View. I believe my experience is a needed addition to a strong board.
