Addressing the budget shortfall is the first step to improving our schools. There are a lot of things that we can do to be smarter in serving all of our students in San Francisco, even in the awful budget situation that we are in. Yet we cannot possibly expect to provide the sort of educational opportunity that we know is essential in the context of such dramatic and unpredictable reductions in funding. California is already 47th in the nation in per pupil funding, which has made us dead last nationwide in teachers per student, counselors per student, and librarians per student. In response to the devastating budget cuts from the state, San Francisco has shortened the school year, increased class sizes, and cut back on critical programs and services. Enough is enough Matt Haney is committed to pursuing new ideas for revenue, working with the City and County of San Francisco to identify partnerships and possible funding sources, and advocating for additional funding at the statewide level. As a Commissioner on the Board of Education, Matt will:
Our educators and staff are the backbone of SFUSD. In order to be successful as a district, we must provide our educators with the support and resources that they need. It is reckless to put educators in impossible circumstances and expect them to be successful in providing a high quality education to all of our students. We need to support them with ongoing professional development and support, smaller class sizes, salaries and benefits that allow them to live in San Francisco, and opportunities for career growth and leadership.
