BUDGET California has been in dire financial shape for much too long. In January, the Governor's Budget was released, and the Department of Finance expects no budget deficit in 2013-14. While this is a huge accomplishment for our entire state, we are not yet out of the water entirely. Unemployment is still too high, and budget projections are often very volatile and prone to fluctuations. Because we are not yet out of the woods, we need to make sure that we continue to do several things. On State Assembly, I will make sure that we continue to keep needless spending down, and that our schools, at all levels, are receiving all of the support they need. Californians have sacrificed so much over the past years to get our state out of this mess, and the State Assembly owes it to the people to make sure we never find ourselves in a situation like this again. I believe transparency is a key component to making sure that our legislators are working for the citizens and not special interests. Now that we have a favorable budget outlook for 2013-14, any processes the State Assembly takes on that are related to the budget should be facilitated with total transparency and should be open to the public. I will fight so that none of my fellow legislators forget the needless spending that got us into this mess. I will exercise the fiscal restraint that I have honed over 30 years as a small business owner, and push my fellow legislators to do the same. The transparency I will champion on the Assembly will allow citizens to have a real voice when it comes to how their money is being spent. |
