Political Philosophy for Ken Norton

The strength of our state and nation is rooted in the faith of our founders, the establishment of the rule of law as set forth in our founding documents. It is our duty and responsibility to do our part in preserving the liberties they have established for ourselves and our posterity. Government is necessary for a good and orderly society, but we must guard against the excesses of government which would take away our liberties and the ability to pursue our own happiness within that orderly society. The greatest asset we have is our people. As Ronald Reagan said, "No arsenal, or no weapon in the arsenals of the world, is so formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women." I firmly believe that there is no obstacle we cannot overcome if we use that 'will and moral courage' in all the things we endeavor to do. As I have traveled around Berks County, from our farms and businesses, to our towns and boroughs, from a young girl starting a charity to help hurting children, to our seniors looking to enjoy the fruits of years of labor, I have found many living examples of the 'will and moral courage' that President Reagan spoke of. I believe that what our people need most is not for government to help them, but for government to get out of their way and allow them to prosper according to the work they are willing to put into their labors. Government's primary role should be in protecting our liberties and providing the security we need to lawfully profit from our efforts. This is the attitude that I would take to Harrisburg. An attitude that believes there is nothing the people of Berks County, of Pennsylvania, and of the United States, cannot do, if given the opportunity. |
