Mental Health CourtsBy Michael J. HarringtonCandidate for Judge of the Superior Court; County of Riverside; Office 18 | |

Expand mental health courtsDouble the capacity of mental health courts and expand the requirements for eligibility. The criminal court system is not equipped to handle mental defendants with mental health issues. Criminal courts cannot supervise defendants with mental health issues.
Volunteer panels staffed with mental health professionals can better supervise defendants with mental illness. Many such persons do not qualify for Welfare and Institutions Code 5150 (involuntary commitment to an institution). If diverted from criminal court to supervision by mental health panels, their progress and participation in treatment can be better tracked and monitored. And if a defendant skips treatment, they can be flagged faster and brought back into court or jail, before they can harm others. This system will be more efficient and also less costly to taxpayers. Our community will be safer as well. |
