About AyanaBy Ayana Kirkland YoungCandidate for Board Member; West Contra Costa Unified School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
I grew up in this district, the Homecoming floats were built three years in a row when I was in High School at my mom and dad's home in Pinole, where they still reside. I know a lot of Pinoleans and Herculeans remember the Pink Energizer Bunny float, that kept "going and going" back in 1994. I was even Student Body President at Pinole Valley High School in my senior year. Now I'm all grown up, an attorney and a mother of seven. My husband, Bobby Young and I chose to stay and live in Hercules where we grew up because of all that this area has done for us. Two of my children have graduated from high school, but I have 4 currently enrolled in the district, and one who will be entering Kindergarten next year. After graduating from Pinole Valley High, I went on to San Francisco State University. While attending San Francisco State University I became a life-time member of Zeta Phi Beta Incorporated, a philanthropist organization where we focused on under privileged children. After graduating from San Francisco State University with a B.A. in Liberal Studies, I was accepted into the Special Education Masters/Credential Program. After one semester, which included a long-term sub- position with the Oakland Unified School District, I decided that teaching permanently would be too emotionally draining and not for me. I later though became a substitute teacher for the WCCUSD and wished I could do more to help the students learn and get the resources they needed. I was accepted into John F. Kennedy School of Law school in 2003 but still continued to substitute teach for the district. Once I graduated and passed the bar, I turned my focus to my firm, but have never forgotten about the students, their needs and the potential they all had. I now run a successful law office focusing on Employment Law, discrimination and harassment; Estate Planning; Family Law; and Personal Injury. I am also a Godly proud member of the praise and worship team at my church Berith Christian Fellowship, a member of the PTA, and a Board Member of Coventry Home Owner's Association in Hercules.... I love my children and I believe they deserve the best because they can be the best. I want that for all the children in this district. My love for children and ability to make the right decisions no matter what, will allow me to do this job!!! That love and passion for children is why I am running for School Board Member. Because I am self-employed, my schedule is very flexible. This will allow me to put in the amount of time necessary in order to be successful in this position. I want to be able to give this position 100%, being able to set aside a great deal of time will make this possible. I am not a politician, my reasons for running are purely because of the concern I have for students. Decisions made by me as a board member will be based purely on what's best for the students in this district and not influenced by any special groups or their agendas. |
