QUICK GLANCE A proud graduate of public schools in San Jose and Campbell, Richard Nguyen believes every student in our district deserves a high quality education. Committed to student success, Richard is an attorney who volunteers as a coach for a high school mock trial team, a mentor for at-risk students, and a board member of a high school foundation. With a law degree from UC Davis and a master's degree in public policy from the University of Michigan, Richard will bring fresh ideas and solutions to the Campbell Union High School District school board. FULL BIOGRAPHY Growing up with limited resources in the district, Richard Nguyen wants to ensure that all our students receive an excellent education by working with parents, teachers, administrators, and community members to improve our schools. Attending K-12 public schools in San Jose and Campbell, Richard's passion for improving our educational system started when he was in the 3rd grade. Realizing that the school library had worn-out books, he wrote a letter - with a picture of an apple tree - to his local City Councilwoman asking for help. The Councilwoman graciously mailed a check to the Principal to purchase new books. Since then, Richard has spent his life advocating for public education. He served on the School Site Council (the budgetary committee) in middle and high school. Richard led two undergraduate classes to lobby the state legislature to make higher education more accessible. He was a graduate student instructor at the University of Michigan. While in law school, he provided research for a legal challenge arguing the state's inadequate funding of K-12 public education violated the state constitution. An attorney, Richard coaches a high school mock trial team in his spare time, teaching students critical thinking and advocacy skills. He mentors students struggling to graduate high school. Richard also serves on a high school foundation with parents, teachers, administrators and community leaders to fund and oversee projects that help students. With his skill and experience, Richard is a needed voice on the Campbell Union High School District school board. |
