John McDowell grew up in San Carlos and graduated from San Carlos High School. Early in his career, he worked in advertising and marketing for several Fortune 500 firms, including Miller Brewing and Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. He has also worked in local, state, and federal government, including time spent on Capitol Hill and as a Press Secretary at the U.S. Small Business Administration. More recently he has written a weekly column for the San Mateo Daily Journal and consulted in strategic communications.
