The tide has turned against the proponents of a commercial airport at the former MCAS El Toro. However, the fight is not over.
Grass roots support in opposition to a commercial airport at El Toro reversed the plans of three members of the County Board of Supervisors to build a commercial airport at El Toro. A major reason the Marines closed the base was because urban development has surrounded the base in recent years. It was no longer a logical place to have an airport. The runways are not safe for commercial use, take offs and landings cause environmental degradation to surrounding communities and due to the loss of quality of life in these residential areas, property values would plummet. Once the real facts of the problem with the airport were known to residents throughout the county, the majority stood behind the movement to stop the airport. It is time to finalize the decision killing the airport proposal and develop sound land use planning for the site.
