Proposed Neighborhood Protection Act

By Rick Heuer

Candidate for Councilmember; City of Monterey; Long Term

This information is provided by the candidate
Imagine a 24-hour business going in right next door. Your bedroom window overlooking a 24-hour gas station or other business. Impossible? Never in Monterey? Unfortunately, it is already beginning to happen. Recently the City approved a request for 24-hour use along North Fremont, over the objections of neighbors to the project, on a lot which backed up to residential houses. They even required, as a condition of approval, that the developer offer to retrofit the windows of the houses next door. History has shown over and over that 24-hour use next door to houses just doesn't work. No matter what conditions you place on the project they can't or won't be enforced.

Rick Heuer and other Monterey residents felt that this was just plain wrong and the Neighborhood Protection Act was written. The Act prohibits 24-hour commercial use and limits the height of commercial buildings next door to residences. Ask the other candidates where they stand on this important issue and if you haven't already signed the petition to put the Neighborhood Protection Act on the ballot contact us and we will get you a copy to sign.
